That's a good point Ashley.

Pardon the rant by us govt-types. :)

For those of you unfamiliar with the WIS, it stands for "Web Interface
Standards", and is a list of standards (must follow) and guidelines (good to
follow) applicable to all .gov.sg sites in order to promote some consistency
between government agencies.

The gripes you hear are not unsubstantiated: some portions of the WIS are
archaic due to the typical refresh rate of government documents. As Chunwui
pointed out, optimisation for 800x600 screens are one of the standards
.gov.sg sites need to adhere to, though I think I've read a recent memo
somewhere that IDA acknowledges the move towards larger screens and may
revise accordingly.

Ashley mentioned that the WIS "is meant as a guideline" and it is not a must
for agencies to comply to every clause. My understanding is that .gov.sg
sites are to comply to the standards portion of the WIS (guidelines are the
good-to-have), and the auditing begins this year to ensure compliance.

It might be interesting to invite the IDA folks in charge of the WIS down
for a future meetup, if only to provide them feedback from the ground.

Anyway, our second meetup is this wednesday, 28th Feb 2007, 7pm @ Multi-purpose
Room, Central Lending Library (Basement of National Library, Victoria
Street).

Details of the programme are available at

Drop a comment on the blog entry so we know you're coming. :)

See you there!

Lucian
