Hi all,
It's been a while since the last WebSG gathering (a couple of months
already?), and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see
everyone again.
Unfortunately, it seems like locating a venue and/or getting
presenters and topics seem to be a challenge for the group. So what I
suggest is something more informal: a tutorial session.
We've talked a lot about the theories and reasons for web standards.
We've also looked at a few examples. I think we need to take it to the
next level: implementation. This is where the tutorials come in. Each
tutorial will revolve around one topic. If you want to learn more
about the topic, then come down and learn together.
The takeaway from these sessions is hands-on experience at learning
and implementing web standards code. That's right: it's all about
coding. No theory, no TCSS. These are actual, practical sessions that
have immediate pay-offs in our projects.
The other upside is that there would most likely be a smaller group,
since not everyone would want to learn (or re-learn) a particular
topic. Thus, it should make finding a location easier. There could
also be more flexibility in locations, e.g. meeting at a cafe (Geek
Terminal comes to mind, or Dhoby Xchange at the MRT station).
To kick things off, my suggested topic for the first tutorial session
is: "Implementing 2- or 3-column Layouts Without Tables." There's
probably a million ways to do this, so we could come together and
share our methods. We may even come up with an entirely new way that
will revolutionise column layouts!
Let's not lose the momentum that has been built up from the first few meetings!
