Today, mainstream media discusses the effects of new media in Singapore.
Andy Ho, Senior Writer from the Straits Times, analyses the effect of Youtube.com on big media. Worth a read. He goes on to say:
The Internet does not have the capacity that the broadcast and print media have for ‘push’ messaging to large audiences. This was perhaps one reason why the Government did not criticise the Bak Chor Mee podcaster Lee Kin Mun, also known as mr brown, until his negative remarks appeared in print.
Another Straits Times article today questions, “Should different standards apply to the mainstream and Internet media?”
In this discussion, Penny Low, PAP MP and government parliamentary committee chairman for Information, Communications and the Arts, says:
We do need to give some space for people to mature, to comment, and to banter. And I think that space is important in maturing a society’s thinking.
